Health Benefits of Wine

When news came out about the health benefits of wine, it gives wine lovers the more reason to enjoy drinking it. A glass of wine, about three ounces, provides 500 calories or about 17% of our daily requirement.

The secret to reap the health benefits of wine is by drinking it in moderation. And what is moderation? Well, moderation is defined as a glass or two each day, and no, you can’t save them up all week and drink all of them on the weekend party. Drinking too much wine per day or per week can lead to negative health effects in many cases.

Wine is mostly made from grapes, but nowadays any fruits in season like pineapple, mango etc., is also being made into wine.

Wine maker crushed the fruit and then ferment the juice. Wine is aged for 4 years or longer. Most wine has an alcohol content of 8% to 20%. Wine may be red or white or rose (pink). It can also be sweet or dry (unsweet). It can be served chilled or at room temperature.

Nutrient Content of Wine: Vitamin A, B, C and minerals like calcium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and iron.

Health Benefits of Wine:

  • In the old time the Roman Empire soldiers washed their wounds with wine, using it as a disinfectant.
  • Wine is also mixed it with local water to avoid cholera and free the stomach from diarrhea.
  • Wine may help prevent gallstones and anemia.
  • Wine improves the appetite as it prompts the flow of saliva and induces gastric secretion for digestion.
  • Wine contains flavonoids and tannins, which are components presumed to prevent cardiovascular disease.
  • Wine may help improved lung function because of its antioxidants content.
  • Wine is good for figure-conscious individuals as it is not fattening and can even tighten saggy or loose skin.

 Note: American Heart Association does not recommend that individuals start drinking to reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke. Experts point out that excessive drinking can actually raise the likelihood of cardiovascular disease, heart attack, and stroke.
