St. John’s Wort is a star shaped, yellow flowers, if you pinch the leaves or the petals, a reddish purple extract that contain hypericin will come out, this pigment is identified pharmacologically as an active chemical.

Health Benefits of St John’s Wort:

  • St. John’s Wort works better than pharmaceutical drugs in preventing and treating anxiety and depression.
  • St. John’s Wort oil is applied topically to provide soothing relief in skin problems as well as prevent viral and bacterial infections
  • St. John’s Wort may be effective in reducing symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
  • St. John’s Wort may help improve sleep.
  • St John’s Wort is effective in treating ear infection and tinnitus (ringing in the ear).

Things to know when using St. John’s Wort for the first time:

  • Do not rely on St. Johns Wort as a magic wand that will relieve your depression in a flash. It is best used with other therapies like; counseling and a good nutrition.
  • If you want to stop taking prescribed antidepressant drugs, slowly reduced the doses while gradually introducing S. John’s Wort.
  • It is suggested to try St. John for at least 6 weeks before deciding if it works for you. It is important to know that when you stop using this herb before the end of the 6 weeks trial, you might not see its effect. Like other medicine this herb will also take time to show its effect.
  • If your depression worsens or you have suicidal impulses, or you notice severe side effects while taking St. John’s Wort, stop taking it and see your doctor immediately.
  • It is very important to always buy St. John’s Wort dietary supplement from a reputable manufacturer.

Evidence that St John’s Wort works; One study of 105 persons with depression, found that St. Johns Wort was 250 percent better than a placebo. Sixty-seven percent of subjects taking 900 milligrams of St. John’s Wort daily improved dramatically within four weeks, compared with 28% on placebo. In a recent German survey of 3,250 depressed individuals, 80% reported improvement from symptoms after taking St. John’s Wort for four weeks.

Dosage and Administration: A common recommendation for St. John’s Wort extract when taken in connection with mild to moderate depression is 500-1,000 mg per day. Results may be seen as early as two weeks but may take longer.

Side Effects of St. John’s Wort:

  • St. John’s Wort has a good safety rating. However, one study reported that some people experience digestive upset, fatigue, restlessness, and allergic reactions using St. John’s Wort extract.
  • A number of studies have reported that St. John’s Wort may cause skin to be sensitive to sunlight.
  • St John’s Wort may cause interactions with other medicines. This can include birth control pills, warfarin (a common blood thinner) and digoxin, a heart medicine.
